Review: ExpressVPN VPN service

Express VPN service
By

I use Express VPN myself at the moment and love it. This VPN service works across all of my devices and all of my partner’s too (all from one paid account). The speed I get with it is more or less as good as without it.

The graphical interface of ExpressVPN looks really good and is easy to use. I also love the fact that I can use the VPN on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. As someone who runs a website, I use all of these platforms. Express VPN has also a proven track record of not logging user activity. They are unable to see what you do on their network and therefore cannot make that information available to anybody else. This is an extremely important thing to have from any VPN service.

This VPN service doesn’t slow the internet down

I don’t have the most fancy internet connection in the world at home or on my smartphone, however I don’t notice any difference in speed when I have ExpressVPN turned on. It works very quickly and if there is any speed difference at all, it is so subtle that I don’t feel it. That means using ExpressVPN to watch Netflix, Youtube, iPlayer, Vimeo or any other kind of video streaming service has never been a problem for me.

Express VPN will allow you to watch iPlayer abroad

I’m British but I live in France. Occasionally I want to watch content from the BBC and with my usual internet connection in France iPlayer is blocked. By using ExpressVPN to pretend that I have a British IP address, I can and have watched BBC iPlayer from France. You have to be careful which VPN provider you choose in this respect because while the majority of them let you switch to different country’s IP addresses, not all of them get past the security of web services like iPlayer and Netflix.

ExpressVPN’s country changing options are GREAT for this website because I often need to provide different content depending on where you live in the world. By using ExpressVPN I can quickly test the different content my readers are seeing around the world to make sure there are no problems with it. ExpressVPN doesn’t have as many servers in France and the UK as other VPN services however it’s the only VPN I know of that allows me to connect to several specific cities within those two countries, which is very nice.

Saving money with Express VPN

I have used ExpressVPN several times to make websites give me lower prices. For example a course I searched for showed up at a good price but I decided to wait a few days to buy it. Several days later I revisited the course website (with the VPN switched off) and I saw that the price was doubled. I switched ExpressVPN on, cleared my cookies and reloaded the page and voila the price returned to what I had seen before. So ExpressVPN works well to combat price discrimination.

Because ExpressVPN doesn’t log anything, you can torrent with it. Still be careful not to download anything illegal because there are other ways you can get caught besides your IP address etc.

If you are worried about your ISP, family or friends discovering what websites you have been visiting, ExpressVPN is a great choice. It masks all of your internet traffic well. Be aware however that you can still be tracked via web technology like browser fingerprinting (advertisers use this a lot). So again, don’t do anything illegal with this service because eventually you’re going to get caught some other way.

All of ExpressVPNs applications are really user friendly except for their Linux application. This is fairly obvious and if people are using Linux then they probably won’t mind that in Linux ExpressVPN only works from the terminal. I’m technical enough to get that working however I’d definitely prefer a graphical interface.

It doesn’t have dedicated IP addresses available or a double VPN tunnel like NordVPN does. ExpressVPN also has a kill switch but not a kill switch for individual programs only, which would be useful to some people. Overall though, it’s a great VPN service to use and I fully recommend it.
